Genre Analysis- The Italian Job- LA Heist

Non-Diagetic sound plays a huge role within this opening sequence to the film. The sound track that follows the scene sets the tone of the high pace action sequence. The soundtrack follows what is happening ion the scene directly, with the music dying down at less tense points. This is to create a larger sense of tension at points during the sequence, and allowing for the audience to experience the relief of the characters within the narrative. This immerses the audience within the genre of the film further, setting a clear tone that this film is an action thriller. An example of this is contrast that is made with the music from the boat chase to the underwater safe sequence. The audience is drawn into both by the music that is behind it.

Diagetic sound is also used to re-enforce the genre, the crashing of the boats creates a high octane chase sequence as it signifies that our "Good" characters are in danger at all time.Along with this, the engines of he boats at a sustained load roar throughout the chase sequence keep the audience aware of the speeds in which the boat is travelling, throwing them into the awarness that this is a action packed drama thriller.

The shots that are used and the speed in which the are cut together are also used to create the genre of action drama. Within the boat chase, shots are shaky and cut together at a fast speed, however in contrast to that, the underwater shots are smooth and long, with long cuts.

To conclude, the film uses a sense of contrast in all area's for the opening sequence to cement the genre in which the film places it self. The film clearly wishes to portrait itself as an action thriller. However, its does not wish to show itself as just a straight up action. The contrast that is created between the underwater scenes and the boat chase seem to wish to establish an identity for this film as being smart, and action packed.
